Candace Coughlan - Wild Health Hub
This is a new one for me…Mother of HerbsMy special find at the @blackhealthgrowersmarket . It was on the herb table with some other “uncommon” herbs so I grabbed it to add to my garden. It’s pretty, fleshy like a succulent and nice contrast to the other herbs I have. To my surprise in addition to being a culinary herb, tastes like Italian mix herbs to me, it has many medicinal uses.Medicinal uses: Chew a leaf for sore throat and coughs. Make a tea for bronchitis, asthma, coughs, viral conditions, to relieve indigestion and stomach cramps, convulsions, as a liver tonic and for pain relief. A leaf can been rubbed or laid on the forehead, to relieve headaches.Picked this up at the Patio Plants Pty Ltd stall. You need to check out their variety and great quality plants: herbs, veggies, flowers, etc More about Mother of Herbs: Also know as: Queen of Herbs, Five in One Herb, Five Seasons Herb, Allherb, Country Borage, Indian Borage, Five Spice Herb, Chinese Three in One, Broad Leafed Thyme, Spanish Thyme, Spanish Sage, Puerto Rican OreganoColeus amboinicus syn. C. aromaticus, C. abroicus, Plectranthus amboinicus F. LamiaceaeWhy so many names? This plant has been cultivated and used for so long that its origins are unclear. It’s believed to originate in Africa, but is now naturalized in many countries around the world. This, combined with the complications of classification for plants in the Lamiaceae family, means that even its scientific name varies. According to my research it’s currently in the Coleus genus. The references to Thyme, Oregano and Mint allude to its ability to substitute for these herbs in various dishes.Growing conditions:* Full sun/part shade/shade (prefers part shade)* Tolerates most soils, prefers well-drained soil* Groundcover/small shrub* NOT frost tolerant I’m going to plant mine in pots so I can move them when it gets cold, rains or snows…. Maybe I’ll grow it inside for now…. Cobbitty Markets Cancelled 😢Whilst we have enjoyed some sunshine on and off over the past week, it unfortunately hasn’t been enough to dry out the parking area for us to proceed on Saturday. We have tried to look at alternate options but the pools of water and soft ground place limitations on these. After what we experienced last month, trying to stay clear of troubled areas still resulted in vehicles getting bogged and the car park closing shortly after opening. We are unable to comply with our DA and traffic management plan without a viable parking option and wish we had better news for you. We thank you for your continued support and pray for drier weather to help the grounds dry for December. The committee is also looking for some assistance in levelling and filling an area to prevent the pooling of water. If anyone can assist, please let us know.
